Not at This Address

When a letter or parcel is addressed to someone who does not live at the address, it is necessary to write “Not at this address” on the envelope or package before returning it. Then, you can hand it back to the mail carrier. This method is particularly effective if you are home when the postal item arrives.

The most important thing to keep in mind is to make sure the barcodes on the envelope or parcel are defaced and the information on the mailpiece is clearly written, stating that the person no longer lives at the address. This will ensure that the letter or parcel does not return to the sender or is re-directed to another address.

Not at this address can also be used for those who move out of a residence or receive mail from former tenants who do not have forwarding addresses. Simply leave an adhesive note outside the residential mailbox that states “No Longer at this Address” and the name of the individual who has moved out.

Accountable mail:

Many accountable mail pieces (envelopes or parcels that require a signature) are delivered to your mailbox with a delivery notice, and these can be refused at the time of delivery by checking the box marked “Refused” on the delivery slip. You can also refuse accountable mail after it has been delivered by signing the delivery notice and putting it back in your mailbox.
